Siding progress

My finish nailer arrived yesterday and I’ve made some good progress with the siding. The gun (a Hitachi) is very easy to use – after about 5 minutes of practice and getting the nail depth right, I was ready to go.

The full 16′ pieces are sometimes a little tricky to install because when they have a curve getting the groove to mate with the tongue below takes some careful persuasion. Dealing with cutouts is time consuming as every cut has to be primed and caulked if around the window, but I managed to get about half of two sides done in two days.

I’m wondering if for variety I should do a different siding on the top third of the long sides – it might give the slab-like sides more variety. Was thinking cedar shake panels, but these are pretty expensive. Corrugated metal? Vertical siding?
